A lifelong and familial love of gardening informs my work with vegetation and wood, whether considering the landscape of my yard or fresh and silk arrangements. In my pieces, I enjoy attempting to capture the peace, well-being, and comfort that I feel when engaged with plants. Recent tagging along to Ikebana lessons with a close friend who is a certified Ikenobo artist has resulted in some joyful new perspectives for style.
In my garden right now, I'm sprouting the seeds from some crossbred day lilies, and I'm attempting to breed a more heat-resistant pimento.
Purple basil, Bliss Parfuma rosebuds, lavender, and Clemson spineless okra leaves from my garden enhance each other's beauty in a tiny, fragrant arrangement.
Stiff pine, soft juniper, red berries, and white lily come together in a wintery exploration of line and curve inspired by natural growth patterns. (I had been feeling snipped off lately on that day, and I wanted to be gentle with the material, despite Ikebana's strict and dutiful rules.)
A buffalo-plaid bow cozyfies a charming mix of warm sunflower, purple asters, yellow and lilac alstromeria, two-tone and yellow roses to signify friendship, and solidago.
The Burning Bush. Seven pieces of wood, glue. 7 and 7/8ths inches wide by 8 and 1/8ths inches tall. September 2008.
An advent wreath modeled after one that my Grandfather made in the eighties. Pine wood. 2015.
An asymmetrical flirtation of zinnias, heirloom blue asters, and blooming basil from my yard perkily celebrates Cynthia's birthday in a repurposed Adam's Best vanilla bottle.
A balance of colors and forms in ethereal flowers. 2025.
Oceanside arrangement in a globe bowl with Galveston sand-dollar, reindeer moss, drift-weathered clay tile piece, abalone, and other scavenged items, including a little friend.
Made with dried liatris, lavender, rose, snowball viburnum, statice, and oakwood rod.
Simple yet elegant celebration bouquet for my friend's citizenship induction ceremony; red roses, sweet-smelling white stock, and patriotic bow.
This Cheshire Cat-inspired silk arrangement incorporates calla lily, orchids, a wordy poppy, a striped mum, and peacock feather. 2012.
Fifties-inspired Christmas wreath (tinsel garland wrapped and pinned around Styrofoam base) with assorted Christmas treasures including Santa hats, presents, trees, and tiny teddies wired on. 2023.
This wreath incorporates many of my favorite things about the fall: not just red and yellow leaves, but also nut clusters, cinnamon, a Monarch (feather) butterfly, and real dried shitake mushrooms. Silks and natural materials. 2023.
Wreath designed to celebrate the football season. Stryofoam wound with pinned ribbon, Homecoming nick-knacks, and plush teddy bear. 2021.
Sparkly heart wreath embellished with assorted silks flowers and faux pearls to celebrate a sweet day. 2016.
A Texas tradition made from football-themed knickknacks, cowbells, and assorted ribbons woven using leather-braiding techniques. (If you're from Texas, you understand.) 2017.
