If you find digital design intimidating, I want to specifically encourage you that you can do it. After technology left my childhood Paintbrush .bmp skills far behind, I felt like I would never be able to catch up with the rest of the world.
A Graphic Design class followed by a Digital Media class at a community college with a caring, knowledgeable professor completely revolutionized my skill and confidence with digital tools. I'm still learning, but it's not overwhelming anymore.
If your resources are limited, I highly recommend getting a cheap Wacom tablet and a one year subscription to the Clip Studio Paint software, which is 1/10 the price of Adobe Creative Cloud.
